WHO WE ARE

At MYCROSS Today, we celebrate the incredible dedication of caregivers. We recognize the challenges they face in balancing their caregiving responsibilities with their own self-care. Our mission is to offer support and resources to help caregivers thrive in both areas, ensuring they feel valued and empowered. Together, we can create a community that uplifts and appreciates the vital role of caregivers.

WHO WE HELP

We support family caregivers, spousal caregivers, parents of special needs children, and all those who have chosen to provide care for their loved ones at home. Together we share experiences, resources, and encouragement to make this journey a little easier. We help create a nurturing environment where every caregiver feels valued and understood.

Our Services

Our Background

MYCROSS Today was founded through divine inspiration to support Caregivers dedicated to their loved ones.  Over the past 20 years, our Founder, Venita L. Wiggins has observed the immense sacrifices made by Caregivers who dedicate their lives to caring for loved ones with various challenges.

Caregiving was NOT in their plans; however, they found Caregiving was inevitable when their loved ones needed their love, compassion, and Selfless Sacrifice.

Caregivers truly embody the spirit of Jesus Christ's sacrifice on the Cross. Their dedication reflects the ultimate sacrifice of love, as they selflessly serve others each day. We honor and celebrate these remarkable individuals who live out this calling with grace and compassion. Their commitment to caring for others is a testament to the profound impact of love in action.

The team at MYCROSS Today includes a Licensed Social Worker, Coaches, and experienced Caregivers, all committed to helping Caregivers achieve balance and wellness.  Our Core Values are Holistic Well-being, Service, Dignity and Worth of the Person, Integrity, and Importance of Human Relationship.

CAREGIVING DUTIES
AND
EXPERIENCES
AT A GLANCE

1. Listening, Speaking, and Reassuring Loved One Daily

Emotional Support: Caregivers spend significant time listening and offering comfort, often providing reassurance in the face of confusion or fear. This requires patience and empathy.

Communication Challenges: If the loved one has dementia or Alzheimer's, communication may be difficult, with the caregiver needing to adjust their speaking pace, tone, and methods to help the loved one feel understood and safe.

2. Bathing and Grooming Elderly Parents (Often Times the Caregiver is Also an Elder)

Physical Assistance: Caregivers often assist with daily hygiene tasks, such as bathing, grooming, and dressing. These can be physically demanding, particularly if the caregiver is themselves elderly or has their own health issues.

Dignity and Sensitivity: Bathing and grooming an adult can be emotionally difficult for both the caregiver and the person receiving care, requiring sensitivity to preserve the loved one's dignity.

3. Changing Soiled #1 and #2 Diapers of Adults

Physical and Emotional Demands: This is often one of the most challenging aspects of caregiving. Changing adult diapers requires physical strength, especially when shifting a person who is unable to assist themselves. It can be uncomfortable for both the caregiver and the loved one.

Health Risks: Handling bodily fluids puts caregivers at risk for infections or injury. Caregivers must take special precautions when dealing with incontinence, often using special equipment to help transfer the person and minimize strain on their own bodies.

4. Physically Transferring from Bed to Wheelchair

Heavy Lifting: Moving a loved one from the bed to a wheelchair, or other mobility devices, can be physically taxing, particularly when the individual is no longer able to assist.

Injury Risk: Caregivers are at a higher risk of developing musculoskeletal problems, such as back or joint injuries, due to the lifting and transferring of their loved ones without proper assistance or equipment.

5. Daily Bed Changing

Routine Care: Bed changes are a necessary part of caregiving to ensure the person is clean, comfortable, and free from pressure sores. This task can be difficult, especially if the person has limited mobility or is bedridden.

Sleep Disruptions: This process may also disrupt the sleep cycle of both the caregiver and the loved one, particularly if bed changes need to happen frequently during the night.

6. All Housekeeping

Daily Maintenance: Caregivers are responsible for maintaining the household, including laundry, cleaning, and tidying up. These tasks are essential but can become overwhelming when balancing them with direct care duties.

Safety and Cleanliness: Ensuring that the home environment is safe and comfortable for the person in care is a priority. This includes keeping floors free of obstacles, disinfecting surfaces, and ensuring the space is hazard-free to prevent falls or other accidents.

7. Preparing All Meals

Nutrition Management: Caregivers must prepare balanced meals, considering any dietary restrictions, medical conditions, and preferences. This may involve specialized meal planning for diabetes, heart disease, or other conditions.

Spoon Feeding or Assistance: For those unable to feed themselves, caregivers may need to provide spoon-feeding, which can be a lengthy and emotionally charged task. Feeding a loved one can be especially difficult if the person is resistant or experiences difficulty swallowing.

8. Medication Management and Administration

Timely Medication: Many caregivers must keep track of complex medication schedules, ensuring that medications are taken correctly and on time. This can be challenging if the loved one has memory loss or refuses to take their medications.

Understanding Side Effects: Caregivers must stay informed about potential side effects of medications and be alert to changes in the loved one's health that might be related to their treatments.

9. Facilitating Phone Calls with Family

Maintaining Communication: Caregivers often facilitate contact with family members, helping their loved one stay connected to others. This can require patience, as the loved one may not remember the family member or may become agitated during calls.

Mediating Conversations: Sometimes, caregivers act as intermediaries, conveying updates, or explaining medical conditions and progress to family members, which can be emotionally taxing.

10. Navigating Healthcare Systems, Insurance Companies, and Doctor's Offices

Administrative Tasks: Caregivers often find themselves managing appointments, handling insurance paperwork, and coordinating with various healthcare providers, which can be time-consuming and complex.

Frustration and Stress: This can be a particularly overwhelming part of caregiving, especially when dealing with insurance denials, long wait times, and confusing medical jargon.

Medical devices and supplies used in the home for individuals with medical conditions, disabilities, or chronic illnesses: mobility aids, hospital beds, oxygen equipment, lift chairs, pressure relieving cushions and mattresses, monitoring devices, incontinence supplies.  These devices enhance comfort, safety, and independence for the loved one receiving care.

11. Seeking Community Resources

Identifying Services: Caregivers may need to research and access community services, such as adult day care programs, respite care, or financial assistance programs. Finding these resources can require significant time and effort.

Connection to Support Networks: Locating local support groups for caregivers or connecting with other families who have similar caregiving experiences can provide emotional relief and guidance.

12. Managing Emotions Felt When the Loved One Has Dementia or Alzheimer’s, Speaks Poorly to the Caregiver, and No Longer Recognizes the Caregiver.

Emotional Toll: One of the most emotionally difficult aspects of caregiving is when a loved one with dementia or Alzheimer’s no longer recognizes or remembers their caregiver, or when they express anger or confusion toward the caregiver.

Self-Worth and Resilience: This can leave caregivers feeling rejected, undervalued, and emotionally drained. The lack of recognition, combined with verbal or emotional outbursts from the loved one, often leads to feelings of sadness, frustration, and isolation.

13. Challenges Felt to Their Own Mental Health and Well-Being, Feelings of Guilt and Shame

Mental Health Strain: Caregiving can lead to feelings of burnout, anxiety, depression, and isolation. The constant pressure to meet the needs of a loved one can leave caregivers with little time for self-care or rest.

Guilt and Shame: Caregivers often struggle with feelings of guilt, especially when they feel they are not doing enough, or when they feel resentment or frustration toward the person they are caring for. This can lead to self-blame and a sense of inadequacy.

14. End-of-Life Preparation

Emotional and Physical Preparation: As a loved one nears the end of their life, caregivers often face the responsibility of preparing for death, both emotionally and practically. This includes discussing end-of-life wishes, arranging hospice care, or handling legal matters like wills or advanced directives.

Grief and Loss: Caregivers may experience anticipatory grief, mourning the loss of their loved one before they pass away, and the emotional impact of caregiving can leave them feeling emotionally exhausted.

RESEARCH

Massage therapy is safe and effective for people of all ages. It's not only a feel-good way to indulge or pamper yourself. It's a powerful tool to help you take charge of your health and well-being, whether you have a specific health condition or are looking for a stress reliever.

Massage used to only be available at high-end spas or health clubs. Some people viewed it as a luxury for the wealthy or a code word for illegal activities. Now massage is widely available and viewed as an important tool in promoting mental and physical health.

Massage is a general term for pressing, rubbing and manipulating your skin, muscles, tendons and ligaments. Massage may range from light stroking to deep pressure. It's generally considered part of integrative medicine.

A common misconception about massage is that it's only part of a spa day and intended for pampering yourself. While this may be true for some people, it is most frequently a tool for stress reduction and pain relief.

Mental Well-Being Benefits

Massage has many mental health benefits.  People say they feel less stressed after getting a massage. Mental benefits include:

  • Lower stress levels

  • Improved relaxation

  • Improved mood

  • Decreased anxiety

  • More energy

  • Increase feeling of wellness

"OMG, I am in tears, I had been feeling so overwhelmed with caring for my father .  He has dementia and many days he is very irritable and says the meanest things to me.  It really hurts me.  He needs 24 hour care because he cannot get out of bed.  This means, I am the one who bathes him, changes his diapers, feeds him, and takes him to his all his appointments.  I rarely have a moment to myself.  MYCROSS came along and provided me with "Calgon take me away" moments in my life.  The quarterly massages on my hands and feet offer the time away and relaxation that I need so desperately.  The ZEN items come in handy at night when my father goes to sleep.  I go into my bathroom, light my candle, put my shower steamer in the tub,  The lavender smells so good and really helps me relax.  I cant thank MYCROSS enough for understanding how important this is to me."
